La Copa Mundial

I have been in Chile for 3.5 months now and this is my first blog posting. What an epic failure I have been to my loyal blog followers. Let me give you a quick run-down of my life right now.
Because it is June, I have been stuck in front of the television (for more hours than I would like to admit) watching soccer. Yes folks...it is the World Cup!!!! In the States I probably wouldn't have noticed that there are EXTREMELY important soccer games being played three times everyday and that at least half of Central and South America have left their real-life responsibilites in order to support their countries futbolistas...
Luckily though, I get to experience national pride at its best here in Chile. During all of the games that Chile plays in Mundial my classes are suspended. and that is the same for everyone else in the country. everywhere. all classes... as in no one goes to class. or to work. or to the grocery store. or to anywhere that does not have cable. If you are not a soccer fan, too bad.
12 hours before Chile plays a game you hear happy honks from every car waiting at a stoplight, pass dozens of people wearing the Chilean flag as a cape, and are reminded multiple times during the day that Chile will win, obviously.
So far so good. Chile Has played twice and won twice. Will they take the gold?!?! I doubt it. The US isn't looking so hot either, but I'll still be anxiously waiting for 90 minutes in front of the tele tomorrow to see what they've got.
So, at first I was thinking.."oh great a WHOLE MONTH OF SOCCER" in a very sarcastic way. But I'm not going to lie...I'm totally into it. I watch the world's most impressive athletes at the peak of their career and wonder why I stuck to making mud angels while playing defense in my elementary school days. Guess it wasn't my calling. But I've got a little spring in my step right now and I'm going to take a soccer class at the U next semester for kicks and giggles. Thanks for the motivation, CHI CHI CHI LE LE LE VIVA CHILE!

The Beginning

Since as far back as I can remember I have wanted to live abroad. There is some sort of bug itching under my skin that wants me to see how people live on the opposite side of the world. So I am leaving to live in Valparaíso, Chile for an academic year where I will be studying social work and spanish language at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso. I leave in a few weeks and I am finally beginning to feel anxious. Not only have I never traveled alone, I have also never lived in a place where I don’t know anyone. I get to the opportunity to carve out my own life in a foreign culture while learning a second language. Thank you all for your support and for following my blog during my adventure. I have got an open road ahead of me...
